An au pair as a temporary family member has an own room for her/his disposal. The room should be at least 9 m2 large and should have one window. As in a case of every other family member the room is equipped with furniture and heated. It should be also lockable so that the au pair can have a private atmosphere. It goes without saying that the room is given by the family for the au pair´s disposal free of charge, because „au pair“ means “on mutual terms“. It means that the au pair helps with the childcare and with a simple housework and in return she/he receives free board and lodging as well as some pocket money.
Many host families have a separate bathroom for their au pair. It is though not so necessary because she/he as a family member can use the common bathroom. In order to enable her/him to get temporarily integrated into the family as a big sister or a brother the au pair´s room should be located inside the family´s living place. In some extraordinary case it is also possible that the accommodation is located outside the flat. The au pair is responsible that her/his rooms remain tidy.
Our hint for the host families:
Please furnish the au pair´s room as comfortable as possible. She/he will be pleased with a welcome card, with a children´s self-made painting or with some flowers which will make her/him feel with you at home from the first moment.
