WHO IS AN AU PAIR?
An au pair is a young between 18 – 30 years old lady or a man, single with no children who travels in a foreign country in order to live with some family there. During the stay the new family member thus supports temporarily the host family with taking care of their children and with the simple housework.
The term “au pair” comes by the way from French and means “on mutual terms”. That is why the au pair in return gets some pocket money, stays as a full family member and takes a part in all the meals. The sum of the pocket money and the number of the working hours are regulated through the regulations of the respective host country. The aim of the au pair´s stay is the mutual cultural exchange – in the safe family frame.
The au pair takes temporarily over, as “a big sister” or “a big brother”, the responsibility for the childcare. Thanks to that she/he can deepen her/his knowledge of the language and usually visits a language course. They become insights into the host family life and in the authentic culture, language and living standard of the host country. They can learn the daily regime of the new family and through that other habits and needs. An au pair collects new experience, impressions and points of view. That all means positive points - for her/his professional future, too.
DURATION OF THE STAY?
From 1 month
POCKET MONEY
An au pair receives in return for his service apart from food and accommodation some pocket money. That differs from the host country to the host country and depends on the number of the working hours.
Our advice:
We recommend you to pay the monthly pocket money to the au pair in regular weekly instalments.
LANGUAGE COURSE
Through the attendance of a language course during her/his stay the au pair will be able to improve her/his knowledge of the host country language. In the most of countries the language course is not a must. In some countries like e.g. France an au pair must attend a language course.
The au pair already governs elementary knowledge of the host country, through the language course it will be made deeper. Thus the communication with the host family will be easier. The au pair can integrate into the host family life much quicker when she/he learns quickly also the language of the family. The au pair can optimally fulfil the duties connected especially with childcare then only when she/he can communicate with the host children. Apart from that the au pair gets some possibility to meet and get acquainted with new people. Thanks to that she/he can also get better integrated into the host country life.
At the end of the language course the au pair can pass an exam and thus to get a certificate. Suitable language courses may be offered for example by some universities. However, also some other offering bodies can be accepted.
The costs of the language course are, as a rule, taken over by the au pair. It will be welcome when also the host family will grant some financial support to the au pair for this purpose. In any case, the host family should reserve enough time for the au pair for the attendance of the course. The family can also assist her/him in finding a suitable course.
WORKING TIME
INSURANCE
During their stay in the host country the au pairs need a valid health, an accident and the third party insurance policy.
In the most of countries the costs of such insurance protection of the au pair are covered by the host family.
The insurance conditions vary from the country to the country: in some countries an au pair can join the insurance policy of the family. In other country it is a host family obligation to conclude an own au pair´s insurance policy. An au pair coming from the EU can be automatically insured abroad.
