What families can become a host family?
The following conditions have to be fulfilled:
- There live one or more children under 18 in your household.
- The au pair will be given an own room during her/his stay with you
- As the duties of your au pair should be taking care of your children and a simple housework
- You speak French in your daily life
- You are ready to take up your au pair with the status "stagiaire aide familial étranger" for at least 3 months
- You are ready to give the au pair time enough for attending a language course
Duration of stay
In France you can take up by you an au pair for the period till 12 months, however the stay must last at least 3 months. The stay can be prolonged by another 6 months (and so for totally 24 months).
Contents of the work
Your au pair takes care of your children and helps you with housework. The exact tasks should be included in the au pair´s contract. The best way is to discuss with your au pair to be too, what a typical day in your family is, so that the au pair can prepare herself/himself for the tasks waiting for her/him.
Costs
With taking up an au pair your living costs will become higher. Then during her/his stay there will live another adult person in your household.
Board and lodging
The au pair gets during the total time of her/his stay with you a free board and lodging. She/he should have also an own room.
Contribution payment
As your au pair´s employer (Stagiaire aide familial étranger) you must register your au pair at the URSSAF and pay the employer´s contributions.
Working time
An au pair works maximum 5 hours a day and 30 hours a week. The babysitting is taken into consideration in this calculation. Please when laying out the working time pay your attention so that the au pair can attend a language course in French.
Free time
Your au pair is entitled for one day in a week off. At least once in a month this day should fall on the Sunday.
Holiday
There are no legal regulations concerning the au pairs´holidays. Therefore you should agree with your au pair in advance on the number of the holiday days. When an au pair stays with a family for 12 months she/he should get during this time 4 weeks as her/his holiday. When your pair stays with you for a shorter time you can shorten the holiday time accordingly.
Language course
Au pairs must attend a French course for foreigners in France. The costs of this language course are taken over by your au pair. But you as a family can arrange for the registration for her/his language course because you are more familiar with your town. The language courses are offered by: universities, adult education centers or organizations. They offer one-year, one- semester or summer French courses.
