What families can become a host family?

  • Is there at least one child under 18 living in your household?
  • Can you give the au pair an own room at her/his disposal?
  • Are you ready to take up one young adult as an equally good family member in the frame of a cultural exchange for maximum one year?
  • Can any person any time take over the au pair´s duties if necessary?
  • Will your au pair have time enough to take part in a language course?
  • Do you have sufficient income for your disposal enabling you to take care of your family and of the au pair?

Only the officially au pair agency recognized by the Dutch Immigration Office (IND) can conclude an au pair contract on behalf of you. In adition to the au pair contract the agency will provide you with all the other necessary documents and information.

Should your au pair stay with you longer than 3 months she/he must approach your respective local authority after her/his arrival to the Netherlands in order to be put into the notification register (GBA).

The au pair´s stay is not equal to a regular employment. However EU citiziens may come in the Netherlands also as employees in the frame of an activity. In such a case they have the right for a minimum salary, but they cannot take part in an au pair programme.

Duration of stay
Au pairs´stays in the Netherlands are limited by one year.

Contents of work
The childcare as well as a simple housework belongs to the au pair´s most important tasks in the household. Above that a time schelude with her/his exact duties is to be made out.

Costs
With taking up an au pair your living costs will become higher as there will live another adult person in your household.

Board and lodging
The au pair a free board and lodging gets during her/his total stay with you. That is valid even in the case of her/his illness and during the au pair´s holiday time.

Pocket money
In the Netherlands an au pair receives pocket money amounting to 300 up to 340 EUR a month.

Insurance costs
Host families in the Netherlands are obliged to conclude the health and au pair insurance for their au pair.

Language course
Your au pair should get a chance to attend a language course. You should assist the au pair in finding a suitable language course near to your home. You as a host family participate in this course with up to 320 €/year. The au pair programme in the Netherlands serves especially for the cultural exchange. Therefore it is recommended that a row of the country´s typical activities are undertaken with the au pair in order to help her/him in this way to get a closer aquintance with the Dutch culture.

Working time
In the Netherlands the weekly au pair´s working time of 30 hours may not be exceeded. At the same time it must be obeyed that the au pair does not work more than 8 hours a day and 5 days a week. No additional babysitting or other secondary jobs are allowed.

Free time
Au pairs in the Netherlands have at least two days a week off. They can be chosen freely but they need not to follow one after the other. However we recommend host families to guarantee their au pair at least one free complete weekend in a month.

Holiday
For the 12-month stay your au pair gets at least the two-week holiday. You can get oriented on this value, so that you can determine the duration of the holiday in a case of a shorter stay.
