Costs
When you take in an au pair your living costs will get higher. Please think of that that an au pair means another adult person living in your household.

Board and lodging
The au pair is entitled to free board and lodging during her/his complete stay. It remains valid also in the case the au pair is ill or on holiday.

Pocket money
In Belgium au pairs get at least 450 EUR per month as the pocket money. Your au pair must open a bank account in Belgium so that you can transfer the pocket money to it. It is not allowed to pay the pocket money in cash.

Working time
In Belgium au pairs must not work more than 4 hours a day (incl. babysitting). During one week the au pair may work up to 20 hours in 6 days as a maximum.

Free time
In Belgium au pairs have at least one day in a week off as well as one free weekend a month. You can fix the free day together with her/him. However, should the au pair ask for a certain day off because of the religion, it must be respected by you.
Holiday
There is no regulation of the au pair´s holiday in Belgium. It is however to recommend that the au pair gets at least two-week holiday when the stay lasts 12 months. You can use this favour as a reference in case your au pair stays with you for a shorter time. Please agree with your au pair in advance on how much holiday she/he gets

Language course
Your au pair must have a chance to attend a language course. Depending on what language you speak at home it can be a Dutch, French or a German course. The language course must be offered by an officially recognized institution. Private lessons, correspondence courses or course offered by private schools will not be accepted. In case your au pair has no elementary knowledge of your language on the day of her/his arrival she/he must take part in an intensive course immediately after the arrival. You as the host family have to offer the au pair some cultural programme so that she/he will get more knowledge about the Belgian culture.
